The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Martín Chirino Foundation for the Arts and Thought, presented the first edition of the Martín Chirino.
The act was presented by Karel Mark Chichon, Chief Conductor & Artistic director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, and Jesús Castaño, director of the Martín Chirino Foundation.
Karel Mark Chichon emphasized the importance of this event for the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, for it is the first ever to be organized by the symphonic ensemble that is dependent of the Island’s Government, thus providing an opportunity to all those conductors who want to focus their professional careers in this industry. In Maestro Chichon’s words, this competition “represents a commitment to talented conductors”. Chichon stated that “this competition is a formative proposal that links, with even greater ambition, the success of the recent orchestral conducting masterclass of the OFGC” and said that a high demand by participants of many different countries is to be expected.
Chichon pointed out that the Martín Chirino – Gran Canaria International Conducting Competition «reinforces its intention to be transmitted internationally, by linking it to one of the greatest artists having lived in this island, namely the sculptor Martín Chirino». Chichon further expressed his pride of not only making the name of Gran Canaria become known to the world, but doing so in relation to the renowned figure of Chirino.
Chichon further pointed out “the first prize of 8.000€, but more importantly the possibility to conduct one of the concerts of the 20/21 subscribers season of the OFGC, the series of concerts reserved for the most accomplished performers”, which will also include consultation with Karl Mark Chichon and Jo Fry of the Askonas international agency. The 2nd prize is 2,000€ and the opportunity to conduct a special season concert, and the 3rd prize to conduct an educational concert. In addition there will be a public participation prize, where the audience will have the chance to make a closer connection to the various artists and offer their own verdict.
The pieces selected for the playoffs, the first and the semifinal round of the competition will include compositions by Stravinski, Beethoven, Bartók and Brahms, “repertoire that is very challenging technically” according to Chichon. The Maestro Chichon also highlighted that “the final phase of the competition will be a subscription concert with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, and will include works by Falla, Ravel and Rimski-Korsakov”. In addition to these, a contemporary piece by the Canarian composer Carlos Gonzalez Bolaños, namely Cuerpos Oníricos, will be included to promote the creation of the competition in the islands.
The competition jury will be chaired by Maestro Chichon, and will be compiled of a panel of renowned international personalities. For the qualifying playoff round, the conductor Gérard Korsten and Kees Vlaardingerbroek (artistic director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic) will preside, then for the first, semifinal and final rounds, with the conductors Enrique García Asensio and Víctor Pablo Pérez, Jo Fry (Askonas Holt) and Erich Seitter.
Jesús Castaño further supported the choice of giving the name of Martín Chirino to the present competition, for he believes him to be «one of the most distinguished sons of Gran Canaria and with the greatest international standing». Castaño explained that «music has always been an essential part of Martin Chirino’s work; in sculpture silence is as important as it is in music». Furthermore, according to him «Chirino conceived his Foundation to be an integral centre of Humanity, and thought that music was the best tool to unite them. Now it is Maestro Chichon who unites us all with this competition, and who desires it to reach international importance.
To this end, the Maestro has collaborated in the design of the logo, that is etymologically an Aeróvoro reflecting the gesture of the conductor, with his open expression, as if drawing in space». Jesús Castaño also mentioned their collaboration in the design of the winner’s medal and thanked once again the OFGC and its director for making the Foundation Martín Chirino part of this project.
